I was first elected to the European Parliament for the North and West constituency area which covers approximately 1/3 of the land mass of Ireland. I am a member of the ALDE Group (Alliance of Liberals & Democrats in Europe) and I joined the European Democrats – a new party formed by former Italian Prime Minister and President of the European Commissioner Romano Prodi.
My association with ALDE follows a trend set by Ireland’s first Independent MEP T.J. Maher and subsequently by Independent MEP Pat Cox. ALDE is the third biggest group in the Parliament holding a valuable balance of power position. As the single Irish member I have a significant influence on policy and, as Pat Cox showed when he became President of the European Parliament, it is a group in which Ireland can punch above its weight.
My decision to seek a seat in the European Parliament reflected the importance which I believe the institution has in influencing matters which concern the people of the North & West constituency. I also regard it as an important platform on which to raise issues and maintain public pressure on the government at home to deliver much fairer treatment to the area I represent.
In the European Parliament I am a full member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee and a substitute member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and the Petitions Committee. For more information on my membership of Committees and groups, go to Committees
