In a speech in the European Parliament Independent MEP Marian Harkin said that action on illegal trafficking of fishermen had to be taken by Ireland and the EU.

She said:- “Recently, the Guardian newspaper published a report alleging that some migrant workers are being abused in the Irish fishing industry and some are being trafficked. The extent of these practices has not been determined.

“I have called on the Irish authorities to immediately increase the number of unannounced "on the spot" checks. This will help protect the workers, it will deter further abuse and it will show the many honest and decent trawler owners that they will not be facing competition from illegal low cost operators.

“While no way minimising the situation in Ireland, there is evidence of similar practices elsewhere. EU Commissioner Vella (Karmenu Vella) has called on the Irish fishing industry to put its house in order but equally the EU Commissioner has a responsibility to ensure that all EU countries fully comply with EU law to prevent trafficking and ensure the rights of migrant workers.

“Action is needed in Ireland and in the EU”, Independent MEP Marian Harkin concluded.
