Marian Harkin has convinced the European Globalisation working group of the European Parliament to visit Dell, Co. Limerick during a meeting today in Strasbourg. This visit will assess the implementation of the globalisation fund and to see how the fund is working in practice and if it is meeting the needs of the Dell workers who lost their jobs.
Harkin says "I am happy that my proposal to visit the Dell workers was accepted by the Working Group. There is no point in securing funding if the money is not distributed properly and the workers needs are not being met. This visit will assess if the funding is delivering measures to retrain, up skill and offer opportunities for entrepreneurship to the affected workers. This is on the eve of the release of 14.8 million euro from the Fund to assist the 2,840 Dell workers."
Limerick was one of many proposals for this delegation visit which will happen in the course of this year.
