The case on the Volkswagen emissions scandal being heard in Castlebar, Co. Mayo has highlighted the fact that there is no mechanism for a legal class action existing currently at EU level.
This was highlighted by Marian when she spoke in the European Parliament in Strasbourg praising those who had instigated the court case in Castlebar on behalf of Irish and EU citizens.
She said: “The European Parliament is not the only place in Europe where Volkswagen’s actions are being questioned. Despite the fact that the Volkswagen legal team walked out, a case is proceeding in Castlebar court in Co. Mayo in Ireland. This case seeks to make public the original expert opinion and technical evidence Volkswagen used to develop a fix for the affected engines.
“This case brings to the fore the fact that we have no mechanism for a class action to be taken at EU level – and we must deal with this issue. Volkswagen settled on a figure of €15billion in relation to a class action taken in the US. EU citizens deserve no less than US citizens when it comes to defending their rights. Well done to those who took the case and those who decided to hear the case in Castlebar”.
