Independent MEP Marian Harkin has called for the re-unification of Co. Leitrim in the review of constituencies, the first phase of which the Consultation process has already commenced.

Commenting on the election results in divided Co. Leitrim she called on everyone interested in reinstating Co. Leitrim’s single county status to make submissions to the Constituency Commission which has been established to review the current position.  Advertisements appeared in The Irish Times and the Irish Independent of Monday May 28th seeking written submissions from all interested parties.

“I will be making a submission before the closing date of July 31st in an effort to try to reverse the splitting of Leitrim”, she said.

She would be contacting all of these who were prominent in opposing the splitting of Co. Leitrim in order to co-ordinate information and ensure the most effective possible submissions to the Constituency Commission, she said.

“I am also challenging Fianna Fail and Fine Gael who supported the division of Co. Leitrim to make submissions fully supportive of making sure that the voters of Co. Leitrim have the prospect of electing a Leitrim based candidate in the future”, Marian Harkin said.
