Today, Monday, December 5th is a great day for Sligo as London hands over the title of ‘European Capital of Volunteering’ to Sligo.

This was stated by Marian when she attended the handing over from London of the title in London City Hall together with representatives of Sligo County Council and Sligo Volunteer Centre.

She said:- “Personally, today represents the culmination of my initiative which in 2011 saw the creation of the European Year of Volunteering which has led to the designation of a European Capital of Volunteering.  Sligo follows in a proud tradition of Barcelona, Lisbon and London and it is gratifying that Sligo is placed on the same platform as those great cities.

“This Award is for the people of Sligo who engage in volunteering activities.  It recognises their contribution to building an inclusive civil society where people are valued.  Volunteering is the lifeblood of so many communities in Sligo town and county.  I am so proud today to be a Sligo woman and to see Sligo people recognised for their hugely significant contribution to volunteering”.
