Nineteen winners representing eight different groups who were winners of Sligo County Council’s Cathaoirleach Awards for volunteering will travel to Brussels this week for a three day visit sponsored by Independent MEP Marian Harkin.
The Award winners will participate in a conference on volunteering organised by Marian Harkin MEP and the ALDE Group, of which Marian Harkin is a member, and will involve volunteers from a number of EU countries. “As Sligo has been designated European Capital of Volunteering for 2017 it is appropriate that Sligo volunteers should attend this conference where they will meet international volunteers at an event entitled ‘How Volunteering strategies at Local and National levels connect with EU policies and programmes’.
A presentation from representatives of the City of London which currently holds the designation of European Capital of Volunteering will be of particular interest to the Sligo participants and to volunteers from other EU countries. There will also be a presentation from Sligo outlining its plans for 2017 as well as an overview of the role of Volunteers in the two recent Fleadh Ceoil held in Sligo.
A broad range of volunteering opportunities will also be addressed at the event by speakers from Slovenia dealing with the role of volunteers in society and especially in providing social services for senior citizens.
